WHAT IS FOCACCIA BREAD
Focaccia bread is a flat oven-baked Italian bread which is very similar to the pizza dough in style and texture. Focaccia can be eaten as a side to many meals or as sandwich bread.
VEGETABLE FOCACCIA BREAD INGREDIENTS
Flour-Basic all-purpose flour for this focaccia bread.
Instant dry yeast-You will need instant dry active yeast to make this focaccia bread.
Sugar– Sugar help to activate the yeast.
Olive oil-Oil to mix into the bread dough, plus extra for drizzling on top of the dough.
Salt-Some salt to mix into the bread dough, plus extra for sprinkling on top of the dough before baking.
Garlic cloves-To spread on top of the dough, it adds flavor to the bread.
Mixed herbs-To sprinkle on top of the dough.
Vegetables-To spread on top of the focaccia bread before baking. Use vegetables you prefer and have available to you.
HOW TO MAKE VEGETABLE FOCACCIA BREAD
Activate the yeast-For this, in a bowl take 60 ml of warm water, add sugar, yeast, and give a quick stir. Let it sit for 10 minutes or until the yeast is foamy.
Make dough-In a large bowl add flour, salt, olive oil and yeast mixture. Start kneading the dough and add water as required to form a sticky dough. Take the dough out onto a floured surface and knead by hand for atleast 10 minutes or until smooth. If the dough is too sticky then add in extra flour. The dough will be very soft that, when you touch it, it bounces back.
Dough rise-Grease the large bowl and place the dough into a bowl and cover it with a damp towel. Let it rest on the kitchen counter for about an hour. Let the dough rise until doubled in size.
Prepares the baking pan-After an hour, transfer the dough to a greased baking pan, Apply some olive oil on hands, and gently press it down into the baking pan. Dimple the top of your focaccia bread a drizzle the remaining 1 tbsp olive oil onto the top.
Spread vegetables over top and pushing them gently into the dough. Sprinkle mixed herbs, minced garlic and salt onto the top of the dough.
Second dough rise-Again cover the dough with the damp kitchen towel, and let the dough rise for another 30 minutes.
Bake-Meanwhile, preheat the oven at 200° C for 20 minutes. Brush the toppings with oil before baking to prevent a burning. Now, bake the vegetable focaccia bread for 30 minutes at 200° C. Let the Vegetable focaccia bread cool completely at room temperature. Slice and serve with your choice of dip.
Notes:
- Let the instant dry active yeast activate until froths.
- Knead the dough for atleast 10 minutes until soft and smooth.
- Brush the toppings with oil before baking to prevent a burning while baking.
- Refrigerate leftover focaccia, cover it with plastic wrap and store it in the fridge.
